ABOUT CATHI:
Cathi Altonji moved to Huntsville in 2006 but had to wait 7 (very long, dry) years for the vocal book on Rocket City Jazz Orchestra to open up. She started out working as a sub for the band in 2013, and became an official member the following year.
Cathi’s appreciation for Jazz started as a child, thanks to being raised in a musical home which included Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame musician Rick Bell, her father.
Cathi decided in 1982 that she wanted to pursue the study of jazz and moved to Auburn Alabama, where she was mentored by jazz pianist and music professor Bob “Fop” Richardson, attending weekly jam sessions at local clubs. While in Auburn she was also a vocalist for the local “big band”, the Auburn Knights Orchestra, for which she doubled on tenor saxophone.
Here in Huntsville, in addition to singing with Rocket City Jazz Orchestra, Cathi enjoyed for a time the privilege of performing in a small combo setting, with pianist Pete Harrison and bassist DeVire Pride, as well being a part of the local jazz jam scene. She has also performed with several live community theatre groups in town.
Cathi feels blessed to be working with the very talented group of musicians that make up RCJO, and is excited to see the next chapter unfold for the band.
