ABOUT RCJO
Rocket City Jazz Orchestra has become North Alabama's most active and sought after jazz and swing big band. This 19-piece band, based in Huntsville, Alabama, delivers exciting big band jazz, swing and pop music throughout north Alabama and southern Middle Tennessee. Classics from Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington reside in the band's library along with big band arrangements of tunes from modern composers such as Gordon Goodwin and Dave Wolpe. This eclectic repertoire ensures performances that appeal to audiences of all ages.
The band, originally known as The Band in Demand, or simply TBD, was formed in 2002 as part of a musical production with a 1940s theme. At the end of the show's run the members decided to keep the band together as an opportunity to play the great classics. The community's enthusiastic response has enabled the band to develop a performance schedule that has attracted the area's best jazz musicians looking for an opportunity to play big band music on a regular basis.
The band's schedule includes concerts and festivals such as Birmingham's City Stages and Huntsville's Concerts in the Park, Panoply of the Arts, and Jazz-N-June. The band also performs regularly at charitable fundraising events, formal dances, wedding receptions, and corporate functions.
