ABOUT DAN:
Dan Joffe began his saxophone education with trombonist William Grande of the Tommy Dorsey band, and later studied with clarinetist Irv Yudkin and saxophonists Arthur Hegvik, Bernard Zipper, Harold Karabell, and Bernard Berger. He has taken master classes or lessons with Gerry Niewood, Denis DiBlasio, Joseph Vincelli, Houston Person, Paquito D'Rivera, Greg Fishman, Lynne Seaton, Walt Weiskopf, and James Houlik. He has also studied with pianist Harry Pickens, and noted jazz educators David Baker and Jerry Coker.
Dan's diverse musical background includes studies on oboe with Ernest Meyer, Donna Reager, Stevens Hewitt, and Monte Bedford. He has performed on oboe in orchestras conducted by Sidney Rothstein, Eugene Ormandy, Donald Johanos, and David Amram.
As a performing saxophonist, Dan has played baritone saxophone for the Stardust Big Band and lead alto for the Summit Swing band. He was the youngest member of the Eric Neimeyer Jazz Orchestra.
In November 1995, Dan came to Huntsville and has since played jazz tenor in the UAH Lab Band, the Giant Steps Big Band, and the Charlie Lyle Big Band. He has appeared with numerous jazz combos and is the founder of the Nightlife Saxophone Quartet, in which he plays soprano saxophone.
Dan plays jazz tenor and acts as Musical Director in Rocket City Jazz Orchestra. He has written a book "Saxophone Secrets" which is published by Jamey Aebersold Jazz.
